Germany used to be a little short on stopping opportunities in some
area, but that seems to be being addressed with on going construction
of many new Rastplatz’s.
Be ready with some spare change as often there is a charge for loos,
of 0.30cent or 0.50cent at Sanifair
loos. (however they are of very high quality). Children are always
free. The more expensive ones give you in return a voucher which
can be redeemed in the shop.
There seems to be 3 types of area in Germany:
A – Parking, normally
a loo (but this may be a portaloo). Usually quite nice and provide
opportunities for a picnic or driver change etc.
A – which will also
have a restaurant, garage shop etc. Most restaurants are the typical
self service restaurants like ours, but a few restaurants offer
semi-waitress service. Drinks and cake will be served by a waitress,
and meals are obtained from the counter. You pay when you exit.
Some also may have a hotel, and meeting room facilities
An – additionally provides
a hotel, and often is more geared towards trucks. These are also
found away from the motorway.
Probably the biggest “chain” on the German autoroutes
is Tank Und Rast

However each station has its own identity

A rather new German Rest area. Toilets and parking. And acoustic
baffle.
